Web Development
Sustainable Management Fund :: Ministry for the Environment
Managing funding for sustainable projects in New Zealand is a full time job, that's why the Ministry for the Environment
has a team of three woking solely on sustainable management. For years, the team had used an Access database to record
funding applications, their amounts, and their details. In 2007, they were in despeate need of a robust, web-based
version of the database that they could easily update, but that also fit into the style guidelines of the Ministry as
well as being e-government compliant.
Using CakePHP and a MySQL database, I created the Sustainable Management Fund Online Database. The system supports keyword searching, displaying and reordering the data by submission date, user-authentication, and a stable, portable framework (thanks to CakePHP). Also followed are standards of compliance for government website, including accessiblity and cross-browser support.
Directory on the Web :: Tertiary Education Commission
New Zealand's
Tertiary Education Commission is lead agency for managing relationships with the tertiary sector and for policy development. The department
has many internal, portal-accessible control panels, each with a specific purpose. One panel,
dubbed the DOW, or Directory on the Web, is a database of programmes available for those wishing to gain new skills. The previous
version was built on old HTML that didn't validate, and used a nonintuitive layout. Using updated, transition XHTML and CSS, the new
DOW showcases a smooth user interface, valid code that is standards-compliant, and a color scheme matching that of the TEC.
Peter Mitchell :: Writer, Artist, Biker
Peter Mitchell, author
of the New Zealand Motorcycle Atlas, Great Escapes, and most recently Camping New Zealand, needed a web
presence that was functional but also represented his playful nature. The resulting site was built using PHP, Javascript, and CSS.
El Tigre
The proprietors
of Invercarill restaurant El
Tigre not only needed a site to promote their menu, but
they also needed it accessible enough that their grandmothers could
use it. Implementing CSS and standards-compliant XHTML ensured the
site was fast and usable for anyone using any browser--even IE on
the Mac.
Lead Magazine
Lead Magazine
was a black and white graphics magazine based in New Zealand's south island. A national first, the magazine
showcased both potential and establish artists, designers, and illustrators. The online version used Flash
to portray the sleek nature of the magazine, with stripped-down, black-and-white chic.
